As such, this course will develop and deepen students understanding of consumer behavior and will practice applying that knowledge to Product Design. The module focuses on the way real consumers think and interact in the real world, how sophisticated idiographic research can reveal the implications of these thoughts and interactions to design and how the design discourse can take advantage of these discoveries. The course content is designed to be maximally practical and to help students pursuing careers in product design, brand management, general marketing management, product and service consulting and crossovers of a number of these functional areas.

The offering of innovative, customer-oriented services is a key factor for the competiveness of modern economies. Therefore, the module Service Design aims in providing knowledge how to develop new services, how to comply with customer needs and expectations and how to launch new services successfully on the market. A conceptual framework guides the students through the process from the idea phase to the development and the delivery of services.

The purchasing and supply function is assuming an increasingly important role within organisations, and its potential contribution to improved business performance has been recognised.

Specialisation of labour across industries and outsourcing trends entail that a large share of the value of products and services is created outside the focal firm, and in collaboration with suppliers. Being originally seen as a support function dealing with administrative tasks, Purchasing and Supply Management PSM has been elevated to a strategic level due to its direct impact on cost reduction, quality improvement and innovation.

As well as capturing maximum value out of supplier relations, the purchasing and supply function has a broad influence within the firm by being involved in areas such as new product development NPD and launch, marketing and logistics and supply chain management. The aim of this course is to introduce participants to the key principles, theories and tools of PSM. A number of key aspects will be considered: from crafting a purchasing strategy, setting up an efficient purchasing process, evaluating suppliers, and managing supplier involvement and integration in the NPD process, to planning and conducting negotiations in an effective way.

New Techniques in Industrial Design Education

Ergonomics strives to optimise human well-being and overall system performance. Thus, issues such as ease-of-use, safety and performance of industrial products will be at the core of this module. The course will tackle both the principles of human abilities and limitations as well as the methods of studying human activity.

The content will balance between physical and cognitive aspects of ergonomics through an integrated approach aiming to user-centred design. Specific case-studies of ergonomics applications in industry and design will be presented during the course to demonstrate the use of methods and to point to the practicalities of the ergonomics practice. The main target of this module is to offer students a grounding in industrial product morphology and aesthetics and their influence on product design. In principal, designers seek to make a product new and original by introducing differences in the form, colour and texture of a product they bring to market.

Product aesthetics is also well recognised as playing a crucial role in evoking preference responses towards product appearance. The relations between product morphology, novelty and aesthetic preference will be studied in this module. No matter how advanced a product might be, novelty needs to be acceptable to customers. Such aspects will be also explored in the framework of the module. The objective of this module is to provide students with the ability to make critical decisions on material selection in the design and manufacturing of new products.

Material selection has multiple aims; minimise production cost, reduce weight, increase strength, while meeting minimum standards in product performance. This task may be one of the most demanding in practice since alternative available materials may present differentiations in performance over multiple and often mutually conflicting criteria. In the framework of the module, students will study materials found in commonly used products, their properties, typical values and measurement details.

Additionally, material selection will be also considered in relation to different manufacturing processes and how these can be interrelated. Furthermore, CES will be demonstrated as a material selection tool. This course provides the student with an introduction to industrial manufacturing from the viewpoint of product design.

New trends in production such as additive manufacturing and nanotechnology are covered extensively. Successful completion of the course will provide the students with the benefits, limitations, and applications of different manufacturing processes for product fabrication. Various processes, machinery, and operations will be examined with emphasis placed on understanding engineering materials and processing parameters that influence design considerations, product quality, and production costs. Technical knowledge for selection of manufacturing processes with respect to product design will be presented.

In the framework of MSc in Strategic Product Design, students are able to participate in a consulting project.
